Why Is My Heat Pump Running But Not Cooling Properly?

A heat pump that runs but doesn’t cool usually has airflow, refrigerant, or control issues. Our techs commonly find dirty coils or filters, low refrigerant from a leak, thermostat miscalibration, wiring faults, a stuck reversing valve, or a blocked condensate drain. In Glendale Heights’ humid summers, debris on the outdoor unit can quickly reduce cooling.

Quick checks:

  • Replace or clean the air filter.
  • Clear leaves and debris around the outdoor unit.
  • Set thermostat to Cool and lower the setpoint.
  • Make sure supply vents are open.
